Tidbits from THE NEW BEGINNING

INT. HOAG HOSPITAL -- MARISSA'S ROOM -- DAY

>>Marissa sits up. Dr. Feldman, bearded, kindly, vaguely rabbinical. Sits across from her. Clipboard in hand. Reviewing some papers.<<

Dr. Feldman: So I see here you were treated for anorexia in the ninth grade.

Marissa: It was tennis season. I got really stressed. But...

>>Marissa shrugs. Dr. Feldman doesn't look convinced.<<

Dr. Feldman: And in the tenth grade you got caught shoplifting.

Marissa: It was just a lighter. And a pack of cigarettes.

Dr. Feldman: And do you still smoke?

Marissa: Not really.

Dr. Feldman: Drink? (off her look) Would you say you drink a lot?

Marissa: I was. I have. I mean -- everyone does.

Dr. Feldman: Have you ever had so much to drink that you blacked out?

>>Marissa doesn't answer. Dr. Feldman begins writing in the margins of his notebook.<<

Dr. Feldman: What about this last year? Your home life must be very traumatic right now. Your dad's legal troubles. Bankruptcy. parets divorcing. (beat) Probably home is the last place you want to be?

>>A beat. And then Marissa nods. Allowing this.<<

Dr. Feldman: You're a very bright student. Many extra-curricular activites. Chairwoman of the National Charity League. A real leader in the community. (beat) Your mother mentioned a boyfriend.

Marissa: Ryan's not my boyfriend.

Dr. Feldman: I was referring to a Luke Ward.

>>Marissa sits back in her bed. A beat.<<

Marissa: He's definitely not my boyfriend. Not anymore.

>>Dr. Feldman studies her.<<

Dr. Feldman: Would you like to share with me what happened?

Marissa: No.

Dr. Feldman: I'm not here to judge. I'm only here to listen and to help.

Marissa: Whatever I say -- you're just gonna use it against me. To prove that I'm....troubled.

Dr. Feldman: If your answers lead me to that diagnosis -- then you need my help.

>>This lands with her. A beat. Without emotion.<<

Marissa: I've been dating him since the fifth grade. We made this decision to sleep together....recently. (beat) And when I was down in Tijuana -- I saw him....Caught him....

>>She looks away. The rush of that humiliation returns.<<

Dr. Feldman: On the heels of your father telling you about the divorce? (Marissa nods) That's a lot to absorb. The pain, the betrayal, the sense of losing all stability. It must have been overwhelming.

>>Marissa just nods. Fighting back tears.<<

Dr. Feldman: Your mother is extremely concerned about your well-being right now. Talk to me about your relationship with her.

>>Marissa steels herself.<<

Marissa: How much time do you have?
