THE O.C. (FOX) - Dave Bartis and Doug Liman's Hypnotic banner ("Mr. & Mrs. Smith") has inked a two-year, first-look development deal with NBC Universal Television. The pact gives the Peacock-based studio first crack at any of the company's TV projects. Hypnotic had already been set up at Universal on the film side in a non-exclusive deal (with its TV operations at Warner Bros. Television). Bartis and Liman currently serve as executive consults on FOX's "The O.C.," the pilot to which was directed by Liman and co-produced by the duo.

O.C. Star Likes Being Unlikable (tvguide.com)

He captures the hearts of The O.C.'s faithful as Ryan Atwood, but Ben McKenzie wants the rest of America to know that he's not just that guy on Fox's popular teen drama. In fact, when fans hit theaters (in select cities) this weekend to check out his feature-film debut, Junebug, they'll be surprised to learn that their beloved boy-next-door is nowhere to be found. It may be difficult, McKenzie reasons, even to recognize him at first glance. The Texas native went back to his roots to play Johnny, a young man who struggles to make do while still living under his parents' roof with his pregnant wife and the rest of his "difficult" family. McKenzie acknowledges that his character isn't very likable, but says he could relate to Johnny nonetheless.

"I've heard a couple of comments about [Johnny], people saying, 'We hate him; he's so mean.' And I just so disagree with that," McKenzie tells TVGuide.com. "That's a silly way of looking at it. Johnny is a guy who does exist. I grew up with guys who weren't all that dissimilar from him. He's a Southern, working-class guy who's trying really hard. You can root for him the entire way."

Taking on a role so different from O.C.'s Ryan was a calculated move for McKenzie, who adopted a somewhat shaggy look, mustache and all, to perfect his film persona. For the 26-year-old, that brought back childhood memories. "I woke up one morning in Winston-Salem [where Junebug was shot], and I saw my dad in a mirror," he relates. "It's fantastic. If you don't recognize me [as Johnny], that's the highest compliment you can give me. The challenge was to treat it as a totally unique thing and to try to be different from the guy that I am on the TV show."

McKenzie first glimpsed the fruits of his labor at the Sundance Film Festival — an experience, he says, that was much better than he anticipated. "The screening was at a large theater, and I've never been in a film before. The largest thing I'd seen myself on is, like, my 30-inch TV at home! But it was so much better than I ever hoped it could be. The fact that I went to the bathroom [afterward] and didn't throw up is a testament to how happy I was.

"It's not a comfortable experience [seeing yourself on movie screen]. If you enjoy that, then there's something clinically wrong with you," he notes with a laugh.

Now that the first-film jitters are out of his system, McKenzie is on the lookout for new projects. Many offers coming his way are still aimed at the teen set, but the actor remains selective and is willing to take a gamble on roles that stretch beyond the realm of a typical teen drama. "[Being on The O.C.] gives you a certain visibility that I'm very grateful for," he says. "The things that I [am] getting offered are more teen-oriented material — some of which is good, a lot of which isn't. I would much rather give a shot at being a serious, real actor and not risk sort of 'cashing in.'"

So until McKenzie selects his next film gig, he remains busy with The O.C., which premieres its third season on Sept. 8. He is tight-lipped about what to expect on new episodes, but did hint at his excitement about one recent addition to the cast: Star Trek: Voyager's Jeri Ryan. "I don't have any scenes with her," he allows, "but she is hot."

Am I becoming a crappy OC viewer? Not only did I miss 4 episodes during the second season (that for some reason I can't even catch on rerun) but I'm gonna miss the season 3 premiere. Granted, it's for Bloc Party (most likely "music soon to be featured on The OC", one of those kinda bands) but still! Grrr.

Although, I am happy for the rest of you to partake in the early OC-ness.

Now...onto the news...(spoilers may be contained so beware)

Melinda Clarke, the oh-so-fabulous Julie Cooper on "The O.C.," will soon play herself in an upcoming episode of "Entourage" and she is hoping to reprise her oh-so-fabulous role of Lady Heather on "CSI" next season.

Josh Schwartz, executive producer of "The O.C.," promised that "this is going to be the best season of the show yet. We came out at the end of last season with a lot of momentum. This season is senior year and if you can't do senior year you should have never have been in the teen genre to begin with." He wouldn't say if Tate Donovan would be back for good. "You know that Jimmy Cooper he's always up to something." And said that he already has plans for season four. "Somebody will be leaving the show that you might not expect and somebody will be coming back." Let's cross our fingers that it's Anna that will be seeing. (zap2it.com)

Mischa Barton and her character on "The O.C.," Marissa Cooper, are nothing alike! Mischa says that, unlike Marissa, she was never popular in high school. But no matter what people think of her public persona, her family knows what she's really like...especially her little sister Hania, who has always been her best friend! In the September issue of CosmoGIRL!, Mischa opens up to her little sister and the whole CG! sisterhood about family, fame, guys, and why popularity really doesn't matter. The issue hits newsstands everywhere on August 9, but you should be able to find it at a store near you this weekend.

Sorry I was a bit slow on this one. Last week aired Ben bein' Punk'd.

car was splattered with eggs as he drove away from "cult events" at a Kabbalah center.

McKenzie's pal's rental car was attacked by a young boy wielding eggs on Kutcher's hit show Punk'd recently.

When the actor got out of the car to confront the young offender and inform the young boy's father of the incident, he was stunned when the man smash an egg into his boy's head, before asking McKenzie and his pal to do the same thing "as a favor to a father".

And Kutcher explains the prank was dreamed up when he suffered a very similar attack.
He says, "When I was a kid all we did was vandalize stuff and go to school.

Whether it was a snowball or throwing eggs, that's how we entertained ourselves.

"The idea for this bit was inspired by a real-life scenario that I experienced. I was heading back from one of my cult events at the Kabbalah Center. I just got a brand new red string tied on my wrist when suddenly an egg is fired off the side of my car. Therein lied the beautiful idea: Benjamin McKenzie being egged while driving in a car with his friend."

Kutcher, his girlfriend Demi Moore and Madonna are among a host of celebrities who follow the Kabbalah.
