Inside jokes take aim at savvy viewers
Why tell jokes for a small segment of your viewers? "I think it's fun to have a dialogue with your audience in that way," says "O.C." creator Josh Schwartz "It's like, 'I hear you. Just hang in there.'" Donald P. Bellisario, of "JAG" and "NCIS," adds: "They just kind of pop out. You're going along and you're writing something, and it just pops into your head. You go, 'Oh, what the hell. Why not?' and you just stick them in. . . . Some of the audience is in on a lot of them, and some of them are not."
