I'm back, as promised. Here is more details of the news I was tryin' to bring to you earlier. If there are some repeats, sorry! But, the headers are just good:
Beck Down with "The O.C." --- LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) With guest stars and musical promotion, the March 10 episode of FOX's "The O.C." has already been eventized -- to use the industry jargon -- to the hilt. Add another reason to visit with your favorite Newport Beach teens (and their randy parents) that Thursday night. As a special gift from 20th Century Fox, the new trailer for "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" will premiere at some point during "The O.C." The full-length "Revenge of the Sith" trailer will get its theatrical premiere the next day, attached to prints of the 20th Century Fox animated film "Robots." The completed George Lucas epic, the final part in a trilogy of prequels leading up to the trilogy that shaped a generation in the late '70s and '80s, will spread around the world on Thursday, May 19. Naturally, FOX is offering no hints as to when the trailer -- featuring the film's stars Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor -- will actually air. The March 10 episode, titled "The Mallpisode" also boasts guest stars Billy Campbell ("Once and Again") and Johnny Messner ("Anacondas") and a soundtrack highlighting five songs -- four world premieres -- from Beck's new album "Guero," in stores on Tuesday, March 29. --- LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Continuing its roll of breaking new and frequently trendy music, FOX's "The O.C." will premiere fresh tracks from Beck's new album "Guero" during the soap's Thursday, March 10 episode.
"Guero" is Beck's first new studio album in nearly three years and the episode, titled "The Mallpisode," will feature five songs from the release. Viewers will hear the first single, "E-Pro," as well as the world premieres of "Que Onda Guero," "Scarecrow," "Missing" and "Girl." However, Beck apparently won't be performing at the Bait Shop. "After hearing the new Beck album, both [music supervisor] Alexandra Patsavas and I felt there were too many good songs to choose just one," says the show's creator Josh Schwartz. "So instead we came up with the idea of a "Beckpisode" - to premiere multiple tracks from his record in one episode. We're really honored to be associated with one of the true and enduring artists in music today." "The O.C." got a similar scoop last season, premiering a new Beastie Boys song. The show has also landed guest appearances by the likes of The Thrills, Maroon 5 and Rooney. There's probably no point in asking whether it's more of a "Beckisode" or a "Mallpisode." Whatever it is, the hour will also mark the first appearance by Billy Campbell, as the new editor of Newport Living and Johnny Messner ("Anacondas") as a man from Julie Cooper's (Melinda Clarke) past. --- WELCOME TO THE O.C., DARTH: If the sight of lesbians playing tonsil hockey doesn't get dudes to watch The O.C., maybe a light-saber duel will do the trick. Fox has announced plans to premiere an all-new trailer for Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith during the March 10 episode of The O.C. The trailer will be released in theaters the following day. --- MegaStar 3/3/05 OC OK for Beck USA Today 3/3/05 The annotated 'O.C.': Feb. 24 episode --- It is the new Jaws? Lindsey? Are there sharks in Chicago (and I don't mean at the aquarium)? Please don't say it's so! Read what the hey I am blurbin' about. --- Liner Notes #9 - Alexandra Patsavas I am really looking forward to the release of Music From The O.C. Mix 4 – coming soon on April 5. As usual, it was so difficult for Josh and I to narrow down the song selects to the final track listing– we found ourselves with about 20 “have to have” tracks for the CD and 12 spots to fill. A number of the soundtrack songs have already aired this season. A.C. Newman’s “On The Table” played while Seth and Ryan discuss Caleb’s arrest, “Fortress” by Pinback can be heard in The New Era while Seth and Ryan are hanging out in the Harbor Quad and Imogen Heap’s “Goodnight and Go” was used thematically in The Sno C. Modest Mouse’s performance of “The View” live at the Bait Shop is also included on the mix. Look out for matt pond PA’s version of “Champagne Supernova” in The Rainy Day Woman. Josh Schwartz decided on the Oasis track for this particular moment in the show early last winter and we were thrilled when Matt was able to go into the studio and record the seven minute cover (with and without rain) in the beginning of January. If you haven’t had a chance to check the Wintersongs EP, run don’t walk to get it… Also featured in upcoming episodes are “Decent Days and Nights” by the Futureheads and “Scarecrow”, a track off the upcoming Beck release Guero. On The Stereo: Spoon, LCD Soundsystem, Caesars, Daft Punk, Damien Jurado, The Kingdom Flying Club and Queens of The Stone Age. --- Our RYAN DEVLIN is ready to give you the 411 on what's hot for "ET on MTV" this weekend! This week's episode: 8:00pm The LA (repeat from 1st season) 9:00pm Rainy Day Women (repeat from last week)
Question:OK, I have to ask. I love your column, love you, love everything. But I don't get it. I check here every Monday to read about the good stuff on TV, however small a category that may be nowadays. Most of the time I find that everybody is watching and talking about most of the same shows that I consider quality, entertaining TV as well. And then there's The O.C. I can't understand why you talk about it as if it were equal to shows like Lost, Arrested Development etc. Actually, I can't understand why you talk about it at all; it really doesn't seem worthy of consideration. I admit all my friends love it, but it seems like just another dumb teen show to me and I just don't see how you and those who know what good TV really is can watch it without laughing. Truly, I attempted to watch it once when it first came on — couldn't get past that Marissa character's horrible attempts at being dramatic or the inane plotlines. Maybe I'm missing something; maybe I just can't see it. What is it that makes people consider this show good? Please explain. — Sam
Matt:Sam, welcome to the world of the "guilty pleasure," and the fact that not all shows are for all people. While I'm not generally a proponent of the "so bad it must be good" school of condescending and patronizing TV criticism, I will admit I enjoy The O.C. more often than not, despite its obvious and often ridiculous flaws. The reason it's taken seriously at all is because it doesn't take itself all that seriously (but when it does, as in the recent Kim Delaney story line, it's a real snooze). I think of The O.C. as an hourlong comedy, a send-up and commentary on the traditional teen soap, part of a growing genre that includes shows like Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal and, of course, the great Gilmore Girls. It reinvents Fox's trademark 90210-style teen soap with self-referential wit, while still delivering classic shtick like catfights, bad-boy brawls and forbidden relationships (most recently, lesbianism). I can't explain why I find Mischa Barton's amateurish acting as Marissa somehow endearing, but I have no problem justifying my fondness for the Seth and Summer characters, for Sandy and Kirstin's husband-wife banter, for Ryan's brooding and for Julie Cooper's spin on the classic Alexis-like evil vamp. It's pure and simple fun escapism, and I'm OK with that.
And to answer Ryan, who wrote in asking how many episodes Fox had ordered of The O.C. this season, the answer is 24 — three less than last year, when the show was split between a summer and regular season run, but enough to take it through the May sweeps.
MISCHA BARTON has a "hard time" wearing designer clothes on TV drama THE OC - as she prefers to dress as a "motorcycle chick" in real-life.
The 19-year-old beauty struggles with her wealthy character MARISSA COOPER's "preppier" wardrobe and often finds herself discarding a number of outrageous designs.
Barton says, "I have a really hard time with a lot of it (wardrobe), because she's preppier than me. Sometimes on the show we try out new things that people really aren't ready for - that even we aren't ready for.
"She's such a Southern California girl, so her look is laid-back and colourful."
In contrast Barton's personal taste involves "wearing vintage rock T-shirts and boots."
She adds, "I don't think Marissa would like to look like a motorcycle chick. I buy a lot of vintage, but Marissa would only do vintage in a high-end, classic way. Everything she wears is really expensive and understated."
