"The O.C.'s" concert venue should be shut down! The Bait Shop -- a ploy to bring in hipster bands -- has become a predictable distraction that takes away from the drama, says Whitney Matheson. "At The Bait Shop, a 'live' performance inevitably features two characters staring at each other, sipping a beverage and maybe engaging in physical contact. As the band plays on, one character races out the door in despair. Cut to commercial."

TV Gal Plays Catch Up

Seth Cohen Quote of the Week
"I am so screwed. Bruce Banner gets mad, he turns into the Hulk. I get mad, I turn into, a 75-year-old yenta."

Inside Joke Quotes of the Week
"All the vomit? How much vomit? Like the little girl in 'Sixth Sense' or the fat guy in Monty Python?" Seth to Ryan on "The O.C." Thanks to everyone who reminded me that Mischa Barton played the little girl in "Sixth Sense."
Quotes of the Week

Your breath smells like Marissa. You are so drunk." Summer to Seth on "The O.C." Thanks to TV Gal reader Andrew for the quote.

It's official. The Cohens are the Walshes of "The O.C." (Thursday, Fox, 8 p.m.). It's where all the kids go when they're sad or in trouble. This week Peter Gallagher, who was a Broadway star long before he was Seth's dad, will sing "Don't Give Up On Me" when Sandy serenades Kirsten on their anniversary.

Kristin at E!

From katy: Big O.C. fan here: Will Ryan and Marissa get back together before the end of the season?
It's not happening anytime soon, crazy Katy. Marissa gets all liplocky with the same sex, you know, and Ryan is far from done with Lindsay. Still, I do hear we have not seen the end of R&M, and there will be a complicated rekindling of sorts before the season finale. (Am I the only one pulling for Lindsay?)

From gracienu: You said Jimmy wouldn't leave The O.C.!
And I stand by that. Jimmy Cooper may have jetted out of Newport last week, but since Tate Donovan is still under contract--and networks aren't normally in the habit of paying people to do absolutely nothing--I'm sure we will see him again, very soon.

From tvjunkie1577: Please, Smallville! Thank you!
Clark's going to go on a college visit soon. The O.C.'s Chris Carmack recruits Mr. Kent to play football for Metropolis, but tragedy strikes when someone's drinking gets out of control.

The O.C.'s Sandy Sings!
by Daniel R. Coleridge

Most people know that before Peter Gallagher played The O.C.'s Sandy Cohen, he acted in films (While You Were Sleeping was this reporter's personal fave). They also know he's workin' the bushiest eyebrows on the Fox network. But folks seem to have forgotten the dude can sing, too! (Prior to starring in Broadway's Guys and Dolls, the Tufts University alum sang in a student a capella group called the Beelzebubs.) Tonight at 8 pm/ET, the 50-year-old crooner lends his singing voice to Sandy for a big milestone occasion.

TV Guide Online: After much anticipation, we'll finally get to hear Sandy sing.
Peter Gallagher: The O.C. has brought me many wonderful things, but the last thing I expected was the chance to sing a great song with great musicians in front of a lot of people. So it's been an embarrassment of riches so far.

TVGO: At least it's not an embarrassment, period. You can sing, but not all TV actors can croon well in Very Special Episodes.
Gallagher: [Laughs)] Whether it's an embarrassment remains to be seen, but either way, I'm very happy. The song I sing is Solomon Burke's "Don't Give Up on Me," which we had in a reconciliation scene between Kirsten and Sandy last year. Kirsten was in the hot tub, as I recall! In this episode, Sandy has completely forgotten about their 20th anniversary, so he's in the doghouse. He can't even remember the correct year, so she's p---ed. My situation is one that every married man will identify with.

TVGO: So Sandy sings to smooth things over. But how'd O.C. creator Josh Schwartz convince you to do it?
Gallagher: Josh had seen me sing on Broadway a bunch of times. Last year, I sang at a benefit he attended. The audience responded very favorably, so he made a note to himself that night to get Gallagher to sing on the show. I said, "I'd love to, but boy, we have to find the right circumstance because it could be unbelievably tacky and awful to hear the song stylings of Sandy Cohen." He absolutely agreed.

TVGO: This idea works. Plenty of people do karaoke serenades at family parties, right?Gallagher: I tried to do it a little bit like karaoke, not too slick or confident. I sang it the best I could — we prerecorded that in the studio — but...

TVGO: But you didn't want to play it too suave like Dean Martin.
Gallagher: Totally. Meanwhile, Dean Martin is one of the reasons I got into show business. As soon as he slid down that pole on The Dean Martin Show and sang "Everybody Loves Somebody," I knew I'd found a new hero.

TVGO: Why doesn't Sandy get a pole?
Gallagher: We've gotta save something for next season!

TVGO: But seriously, folks. Kim Delaney's doing five February sweeps episodes as Sandy's ex-flame. What's the scoop there?
Gallagher: Five or six, yeah. This is the season where everyone's relationships will be tested. You can see how strong something is when it doesn't break. Kim plays Sandy's first great love. She was part of his radical past at Berkeley. Such a big part, in fact, that she got herself into a lot of trouble. Her father, who's Sandy's former law professor and mentor, needs him to help her.

TVGO: Please don't tell me they had a love child. Seth doesn't need any more surprise Cohen relatives!
Gallagher: At this point, I know of no children.

TVGO: How well did Ms. Delaney do on the set?
Gallagher: Kim was absolutely extraordinary to work with. I've been a fan of her work as an actress and I was impressed with her as a person. On her first day, she had to shoot 10 pages and she was word-perfect. She was very generous, and it was really a treat. I'm lovin' this job.

A downloadable version of Gallagher's special song is currently available at theocinsider.com (payment membership needed).

SOAPnet Shows Some 'Skin'
(Wednesday, January 12 02:53 PM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) The very short-lived drama "Skin" is getting a second life, thanks to cable channel SOAPnet.

The series, which lasted only three weeks on FOX last season, will get a full run on SOAPnet this year, the Disney-owned network announced Wednesday (Jan. 12). That full run consists of eight episodes, the number of shows produced before FOX pulled the plug.

The channel has also picked up "The Monroes," a Washington-set drama about a powerful political family starring William Devane ("24") and Susan Sullivan ("Dharma & Greg") that aired on ABC in 1995. SOAPnet will show all eight episodes, including three that never saw the light of day on ABC

"Short-lived series have a home on SOAPnet," says Deborah Blackwell, general manager of the channel. "The acquisitions of 'Skin' and 'The Monroes' continue to establish our brand as a home for all soaps and provides our viewers with a 24-hour soapy environment."

"Skin" is a Romeo-and-Juliet-like story set in present-day Los Angeles, centering on Adam (D.J. Cotrona), the son of the district attorney, and Jewel (Olivia Wilde, "The O.C."), the daughter of a porn producer that the D.A. is trying to prosecute. It was also FOX's first collaboration with bigshot producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Despite heavy promotion during FOX's 2003 baseball playoff coverage and a fair amount of critical praise, the show tanked when it hit the air, drawing only about 5.2 million viewers in its brief run. It was the first real scripted dud from Bruckheimer TV (not counting the never-aired WB pilot "Fearless"), the hit factory behind the "CSI" franchise, "Without a Trace" and "Cold Case."

Both "Skin" and "The Monroes" are set to premiere in the spring, joining a SOAPnet stable of prime-time soaps that includes "Beverly Hills, 90210," "Dynasty," "Melrose Place" and "Dallas."

Best Bet

The O.C.
8:00 PM - FOX
Lindsay (Shannon Lucio) and Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie) are still trying to figure out their exact relationship -- is she his aunt, or his girlfriend? Creepy. Later, it's an anniversary to remember as Sandy (Peter Gallagher) serenades Kirsten (Kelly Rowan) at the Bait Shop. Gallagher's a Broadway star too, you know.

North Shore
9:00 PM - FOX
It's already season finale madness over on the "North Shore." After the hotel crew comes up with Jason's (Kristoffer Polaha) bail money, the police ask him to help them implicate Vincent (James Remar) by wearing a wire -- a job which Jason refuses to do until he learns that Vincent lied to him. Meanwhile, Nicole (Brooke Burke) learns of Jason's plight and finds herself wondering who truly has her heart. Distressed at seeing Alex (Shannen Doherty) with Chris (Jay Kenneth Johnson), MJ (Nikki DeLoach) commiserates with a singer in the hotel's lounge and finds a musical outlet for her depression. (FYI: DeLoach used to be a member of the pop group Innosense.) Will we see the Grand Waimea gang again next season? Do you care? -----

The O.C.
Five great things said on tonight's delicious episode:
1.) "Holy '80s teen-comedy plot!"
2.) "You're becoming more like me," Seth tells Ryan, "which paves the way for me to become the brooding bad boy." Finally someone says it out loud! I know they were only kidding. But that's what's happening. With every episode Ryan emotes more and Seth acts out. It's role reversal, people.
3.) "Your breath smells like Marissa. You are so drunk!" Summer says to Seth after he gets hammered in an attempt to impress Alex.
4.) "I need to learn how to be a real dad," Jimmy tells Marissa. "So. Um. I'm leaving." Riiiight. OK. So Jimmy's going to Maui before he damages his daughter by getting back with her mother — aka the woman who ruined them all. Got it. But, please. People need to quit blaming Julie for everything Jimmy ever did wrong. Yes, she was an evil beyaatch. But she never told the man to steal from his clients. Dude needs to own up to the fact that he has no cojones. That's why he couldn't say no to his overdemanding wife, and that's why he can't stay around to parent his alcoholic teenage daughter.
5.) "Of course I'm screwed up. I'm the daughter of a thief and a slut." Oh, Marissa.

Gallagher Joins 'O.C.' Musical Roster
(Friday, January 07 08:18 AM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) "The O.C." is adding to the list of indie musical artists to appear on the show, which has already welcomed the likes of the Walkmen, the Killers and Modest Mouse this season.

The latest addition, appearing next week, is an unsigned solo artist, but viewers of the show are already very familiar with him: He's series star Peter Gallagher, and his pipes are legit.
In the episode airing Thursday, Jan. 13, Sandy Cohen (Gallagher) forgets his 20th wedding anniversary, landing him in hot water with wife Kirsten (Kelly Rowan). Realizing he needs a grand gesture to make up for his boneheadedness, he arranges to sing Solomon Burke's "Don't Give Up on Me" for her at the Bait Shop.

On his web site, the Broadway veteran says he was reluctant at first, but "O.C." creator Josh Schwartz convinced him of the idea.

"Josh ... had seen me sing on Broadway and last year at a benefit in Los Angeles and thought it might be a good idea to see Sandy Cohen sing on the show," Gallagher writes. "I was a little wary of offering the song stylings of Sandy Cohen, but, true to form, Josh came up with a terrific episode and a believable context for the singing to happen."

Gallagher earned a Tony nomination in 1986 for his work in a revival of "Long Day's Journey into Night." His musical credits include the Broadway production of "Grease" and an acclaimed performance as Sky Masterson in "Guys and Dolls" in 1992.

Ted Casablanca's Awful Truth E!

Even that prissy Mischa Barton, whom I adore, was being revoltingly polite over in Maui for the Xmas season. Right there in public, too. She signed an autograph for a young girl at the Four Seasons (where boy-toy Brandon Davis even had the nerve to be in shape for his swimsuit hour!).

Oh, Missy Mischa, like I don't know what you're really like back at home, complaining that your bottled agua at the Grove isn't room temperature! Get real!

That totally, like, licklicious Samaire Armstrong, as you may not know, is part of Fran Drescher's new date-'em-young series, Shacking Up. Think Mrs. Robinson meets the WB, and you get the idea. Hear it's no Nanny. But Fran's fierce as evah. And so is gorgeous guest star Samaire's humor.

Or nerve--take your pick: According to sources who were present at a taping, the 24-year-old Entourage honey turned in a performance where her bust was the most memorable thing present (damn that Jess 'n' Lindsay!), and Ms. A. reportedly reprimanded the director in front of not only cast and crew but a live audience of hundreds for calling her "Sam." And she wasn't trying to be funny.

Get that on film, and the WB just may be back to whence its young, hot 'n' bothered came.
Ain't a better brooder than O.C. hunk... Benjamin McKenzie, hunting down a super rare CD at the Wherehouse. Hell-Ay. No dice. Someone suggested Amoeba Music, bien sûr, a fave locale of his castmates Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson. The unshorn fella flaunted bulging biceps in a cazh tee.

Routine can be healthy, I guess, for...
Brandon Davis, yakking on his cell, treading out of you know where--the Pacific Grove Theaters. Sigh. The oil-tycoon spawn wandered over to La Piazza for nearby Italian. He linked up with a mysterious young blonde, perhaps Mischa's li'l sis...or not. The two lovelies sat in the most conspicuous al fresco spot, natch.
