NEW FACES FOR 'O.C.'
FOUR new teen icons- to-be have joined the second season of the runaway Fox hit, "The O.C."
The new crew will include a "yard boy" DJ (Nicholas Gonzales, 28) who producers hint might have a fling with Marissa, the character played by "O.C." star Mischa Barton (news).

"Marissa spent the summer by herself, drinking and lonely," series creator Josh Schwartz said yesterday during a conference call with reporters to promote the new season, starting Nov. 4.
Other newbies include Michael Cassidy, 21, as Zach, a waspy jock who's the son of a congressman; Shannon Lucio, 24, as brainiac Lindsay; and native New Yorker Olivia Wilde, 20, as Alex, who runs The Bait Shop, a new rock club/hang out.

Schwartz says that The Bait Shop will feature performances by up-and-coming bands.
According to Schwartz, his portrayal of rich kids living in an exclusive Southern California community has turned out to be pretty close to the real thing.

"I watched the first episode of 'Laguna Beach,' the MTV reality series [about kids from the real Orange Country] and we're pretty close," he says.

Schwartz added that Linda Lavin will be making another guest appearance as a Jewish grandmother called The Nana.

Welcome to Season 2 of The O.C.

The O.C.'s kid creator, Josh Schwartz, has been mad busy dreaming up drama for Season 2, which kicks off Nov. 4 on Fox. So busy, in fact, that the ambitious 28-year-old hit the pause button on plans for his next big nighttime sudser.

"It's tentatively titled Athens," Schwartz tells TV Guide Online. "It'll be set in a New England college town — probably Boston — and it is going to chronicle the lives and loves of the professors, students and the townies who live around the college."

"We were rushing, at first, to try to get it on the air in January [2005]," he continues, "but it's extremely difficult to launch a new show after the first year of [The O.C.]. Year 2 is an incredible year for any television show. As The O.C. started up again, I started to feel myself potentially getting pulled away. I wanted both things to be great. I don't think anybody benefits if The O.C. suffers and the new show is not any good.

"So what we've done is we rolled Athens back a little bit and we're gonna try to get it on the air in August, right around the time The O.C. launched. That'll allow me to get through this year completely focused on The O.C. and then launch right into the second show."

Now let's dish our fave Orange County-based dramafest. You already know four newbies — including Skin's Olivia Wilde — are coming in to mix it up with Ryan, Marissa, Seth and Summer, all of whom are single again. "We don't have any big stunt-casting plans at this point," Schwartz notes. "The new cast members are all great, but there's no J.Lo." Forget her, what about Seth's Jewish nana, who was fighting cancer when last seen?

"Linda Lavin will definitely be back," Schwartz chuckles. "The nana was a very popular character. I'm happy to say that the chemotherapy, therefore, is working. She'll be back late in the spring, maybe around Passover again." Not for Chrismakkuh? "No," he responds. "We have enough holiday spirit with Chrismakkuh."

Speaking of special occasions, fans can't help but wonder if Benjamin McKenzie and Co. be graduating from high school anytime soon. Ryan's portrayer is 26, after all. "I think everyone's got a different opinion on this," Schwartz teases. "The actors and the network certainly have their own takes on it — and those two are probably not the same take. But I foresee at least this year and next year in high school. Then, I'll cross that bridge when we come to it at the end of Year 3, should we be lucky enough to come back for Year 4."

At least they're giving Ryan's bare-knuckled brawling a rest. "It's a long time before we really see any fists flying," he says, "and even then, it's not much of a fight."

Who's a Cheeseburger? Party Girl Discovers That and Much More at the O.C.-Heavy Biggest Show
by Lara Morgenson Oct. 21, 2004

When it rains in L.A., all party madness screeches to a complete halt. At first, I welcome the hiatus, since I desperately need to catch up on my beauty regimen. But after indulging in a bubble bath and applying a fresh coat of nail polish, I'm restless. So, I decide to brave the slick streets (though it's the L.A. drivers--and not the actual streets--that I should worry about) and head up to the Esquire House for the Biggest Show Benefit for the Young Storytellers Program, sponsored by Youth, I.N.C.

Sure, hanging with a bunch of third- and fourth-grade aspiring scribes might not sound like a prescription for a party, but throw in my fave posse (the cast from The O.C.), and I'm so there.
"Tate Donovan pushed for us all to do this," says a game-faced Adam Brody. "If Tate says it's for a good cause and thinks it's a good thing to do, I'll do it.

If he says 'Take heroin, it's for the children,' I'd do it. I'll follow him anywhere." Lucky for Brody, tonight the only thing his costar is asking him to do is act out scenes written by fourth graders. And the best part? It's a recess flashback, as the celebs line up and the kids get to handpick the cast. Hmmm...wonder who will go first? "I have to say I'm a little nervous!" Rachel Bilson confides as she heads in for the big lineup. "No one wants to be picked last!"

Celeb to Civilian Ratio: 1:20. It's family affair tonight, as Anthony LaPaglia and Melinda Clarke show up with their tiny pigtailed tots.

Guest List: In addition to Brody and Bilson, the actors flexing their improv chops tonight are LaPaglia, who lands the juicy role of a cheeseburger, while his counterpart, the ripe 'n' randy banana, is played by Benjamin McKenzie.

Further filling out the acting roster are O.C. matriarch Kelly Rowan, Less Than Perfect's Zachary Levi, Joan of Arcadia's Jason Ritter, CSI: Miami's Emily Procter, Summerland's Kay Panabaker and her sister Danielle.

Got Grub? Finding food is tough tonight. "I nearly got attacked," laughs a server as he swings by with an empty tray. Traces of tomato and garlic lead me to believe he had bruschetta. I finally track down a server toting roast beef and blue cheese on crackers and bites of goat cheese and fig, but a hungry kid snags the last two bites, and I'm left once again to scavenge for crumbs.
Drinks: There's nothing more perfect on a cold and wet evening than a steaming cup of hot chocolate. The only thing missing are marshmallows.

Too Glam! "Literally, I just ran out the door," says the stylin' Bilson who haphazardly threw together her casually chic outfit of rugged suede boots and denims with a T-shirt under a cute pink hooded tweed jacket.

"I probably should've worn something a little nicer tonight," she continues as she looks around at the duded-up parents and dressed-up kids. "But whatever!"

Oops! Youth I.N.C.'s newly announced national spokesperson Tate Donovan gets the show kicked off by introducing the actors. He flies through his own castmembers but gets tripped as he moves along. "Uh...who else his here?" he stammers with a laugh as blanks on the names of the rest of the crew, including Ritter. "If it's not written down, I don't know!"

Gossip 'n' Gab: That nasty little rumor à la Star magazine, that Bilson and Brody are over, is clearly a case of false information. Tonight, it's a sweet scene of complete adoration, as the inseparable Adam and Rachel seem to be head-over-heels for each other. Squeezed side-by-side onto the same chair, the cuddly twosome exchange little smiles and whisper secret comments throughout the night. I promise you Summer and Seth lovers that Adam and Rachel, at least, are rock solid.

Scene Stealer: "You know how there's a knight story, and you really want to be the knight?" ponders McKenzie before going onstage. "And instead you end up being the horse with no lines? I could see that happening." But Ben doesn't need to worry, as he ends up bringing down the house. While performing a scene from the play The Chubby Monkey, he flirtily teases Levi's monkey character, "Eat me! Eat me!" Finally, Zachary the Monkey gives in and "peels" Banana Ben, who responds by giggling and doing a shy shimmy. Forget Seth, I'm totally a Ryan girl. Give me the bad boy any day--especially one who plays a sexy second banana.

MIA: Mischa Barton and Lindsay Lohan canceled at the last minute. Guess they're just too cool for school.

All That Grab: After two dry weeks of swag, I clean house tonight. The gift bag is stocked with gift certificates from Perla Jewels and Sony ($200!), a one-week pass to work out at Equinox, Sunlight Spa candles, a Fila purse, a Cranium Deluxe game and tons of beauty products.
Okay, revelers, this has been a night of good, clean fun--but don't worry, there's plenty of fab bashes ahead, as Fashion Week is just around the bend. You know you can count on me to find out who's gettin' down 'n' dirty! Stay tuned...

From Sophie_from_New_: I just loved the T-shirt you wore when you met The O.C. cast, you know--the one that said "I'm a Seth girl." I was wondering where you got it. From http://www.octees.tv/, and they come in all shapes and colors and sizes--and Ryan, too!
From larrygirl: O.C. dish?Yes. Josh Schwartz talked with reporters a couple of days ago and revealed some juicy info, particularly on casting. He dispelled rumors that J.Lo will be making an appearance in Newport. He had heard people talking about that, and said, "That's awesome," but not true. But! Get this: Schwartz wants Justin Timberlake to guest star, playing a role on the show within the show, The Valley. Schwartz said, "See, Rachel (Bilson) has a huge...well, you know, I should be careful what I say. Let's just say Rachel is a fan of Justin Timberlake's work, and the prospect of him appearing on the show may have caused tremors in Adam Brody's dressing room." Timberlake was approached last season, but was touring overseas at the time. However, The Valley is on The O.C. again this season, and Schwartz said, "If he's available, gimme a call, Justin, J.T."

From affgomes: Star reported that Brody and Bilson were over. You were on the set. Please share your thoughts! They seemed close to me. Rachel told me they had just gotten back that weekend from Nevada, where they campaigned together for Kerry. Let's hope my tee didn't stir up any trouble...kidding. Rachel loved it, actually.

FYI, sorry for the distraction, but Party Girl was monitoring the Rachel-Adam situation in the flesh last night. And, Star is sooo wrong. At an event called the Biggest Show, where they act out plays written by nine-year-olds to benefit a mentor program, R. & A. showed up and were very much together, looking lovey-dovey, and they left hand in hand. She sat in his lap. Star is right up there with Teddy C. as far as sanity goes. Okay, Party Girl has left the premises. Back to our regularly scheduled programming.

From reggielee: Is there really going to be an Arrested Development crossover? No. They were, in fact, approached about David Cross having a walk-on role, but while Schwartz "loves that show, and thinks it's the best half hour on network television," he thinks it would be too much.

Frommovieguru14: Please give me some juice on Life As We Know It. It's so great, and that main guy is hot, hot, hot.He is hot, hot, hot! (aka Sean Faris)

And here's some hysterical (to me, probably not to him) scoop: He was offered a role on The O.C., and his agent told him to turn it down. That's gotta hurt, no?
