Superfriendly behind the scenes, too, was Adam Brody on the set of The O.C.. Performers who have been hired by the show quite recently are sending back pissy-attack reports (certain height-challenged ones were incensed they didn't have the right bottled H20, for ince) about many O.C.ers, save Mr. B., who's too dreamy.

Featuring Underground Bands Confers Coolness on 'The O.C.' And Helps Propel Album Sales
By ETHAN SMITH Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
August 2, 2004; Page B1

The debut CD of California rock band Rooney was languishing. In January, without a hit single, the self-titled album had fallen off the Billboard 200 chart, having sold just over 150,000 copies in seven months in stores.

Then the band appeared on the hit TV show "The O.C." on News Corp.'s Fox network. The band played two songs in a plotline involving the characters' trip to a Rooney concert. The TV program kickstarted a chain of events in which the album re-entered the charts and sales ultimately doubled.

Fox's frothy intergenerational soap opera, set in the suburbs between Los Angeles and San Diego, showcased alternative rock throughout its first season. It played music by bands that are obscure by the usual network-television standards and listed the acts in a special episode-by-episode music guide on the show's Web site. The show's second season, which has just started production, will probably focus even more heavily on music. Bands are eagerly lining up for spots on the soundtrack and on camera.

"The O.C." has become an influential and ambitious outlet for a type of underground rock that, until recently, was largely ignored by commercial radio. And "The O.C." isn't the only show featuring adventurous music these days. Other network and cable programs, from HBO's "Six Feet Under" to the WB's "Summerland," also make a point of emphasizing music that isn't necessarily in the Top 40. For the bands, these TV dramas have become an increasingly key vehicle to mainstream exposure, as commercial radio playlists have tightened.

Meanwhile, for TV producers, the use of hip bands such as Interpol, Fountains of Wayne and Joseph Arthur has become a quick, inexpensive way to confer upon a program the kind of coolness not normally associated with network TV. The point isn't corporate synergy: In the vast majority of cases, the bands' labels aren't affiliated with the network or production company behind the show.

Music industry insiders say a band with some name recognition, but without a big hit, can command a licensing fee of around $30,000 for each song used on TV. The fee is split among a variety of parties. For established stars, the fees can go much higher. "The O.C." and a number of programs on the WB offer bands the opportunity to flash the album cover during the closing credits -- sometimes in exchange for a discount on the licensing fee.

Bands and music executives single out "The O.C." for praise because its writers and producers use the music as overt elements of plot and dialogue, not just as atmosphere. They believe that kind of treatment drives record sales more effectively, in part because it makes the appearance seem less like a clunky sales pitch.

Jordan Kurland, founder of Zeitgeist Artist Management Ltd., fondly recalls the first time "The O.C." incorporated a song by the Washington state cult band Death Cab for Cutie, which he represents. "It was playing on the car radio, and Seth and Summer" -- characters on program -- "started arguing about it," Mr. Kurland remembers. "He said, 'Don't dis the Death Cab.'"

The makers of "The O.C." say they began including relatively obscure music for a simple reason: It's what they listen to. "For the first seven episodes we didn't have a music supervisor, so we were taking music off my iPod," says creator and executive producer Josh Schwartz. In fact, he says, he is often unable to write a scene until he finds the right song to accompany it.

Soon the show hired a music supervisor, Alexandra Patsavas, to keep the musical pipeline full. Bands and record companies now jockey to be included in the 15- to 20-song compilation CDs Ms. Patsavas sends "The O.C." producers each week. "We get hooked up a lot more than we used to," says Mr. Schwartz. "Free CDs, free [concert] tickets."

Death Cab has sold just over 184,000 copies of its most recent album, "Transatlanticism." Its previous CD, "Photo Album," has sold 81,000 copies. TV can't take all the credit for the sales gain, but it is an important factor. Matt Wishnow, president of Insound, an online retailer specializing in independent rock, says that for bands with established fan bases but not much radio play, the TV appearances are "a big driver of incremental sales."

For Rooney, appearing on "The O.C." was a "catalyst" for other important developments, says Andy Gould, the band's manager at Beverly Hills agency the Firm. And TV affords different benefits than radio, he adds. "They've become more famous than any one song of theirs," Mr. Gould says. "Which I believe is the key to developing new artists."

In the first week after its appearance on "The O.C.," Rooney's sales almost tripled. With the imprimatur of a hip, young show, the band landed appearances on the "Tonight Show," the "Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn" and "Today," giving the album a second wind, and propelling it to respectable sales of over 333,000.

Rooney's handlers continue to lean on "The O.C." for promotional help. Mr. Gould says he recently received a memo from the band's label, Vivendi Universal SA's Geffen Records, that included a timetable of when the episode featuring the band was being broadcast in several foreign countries. The memo went on to say, "we should refocus the release of the record to when that episode is airing."

Next season, even more bands are likely to reap such benefits. Mr. Schwartz says "The O.C." is adding a new set to the program, a venue on the show called the Bait Shop, which he describes as an "all-ages club." Ms. Patsavas has already lined up bands -- including Modest Mouse, the Killers and the Walkmen -- for Bait Shop performances in three episodes next season. A song by Modest Mouse was featured on an episode last season, helping propel sales of the group's most recent album, "Good News for People Who Love Bad News," to over 591,000 copies, compared with just 279,000 copies of its previous release.

Matt Marshall, the Artists & Repertoire executive at Sony Corp.'s Epic Records who signed Modest Mouse to the label, says TV is only part of the success story. The band, he says, "did a lot of legwork to get to the point that a TV show would notice them."

"The O.C." may have created a new genre. This fall Time Warner Inc.'s WB network will launch a program from two executive producers of "The O.C.," plus former teen idol Shaun Cassidy, called "The Mountain." Lew Goldstein, the WB's co-president of marketing, calls the show "a 'Dynasty'-type soap that takes place on a [ski] mountain." The show's creators have hired Ms. Patsavas to oversee music and are in discussions with the band Blink-182 to use its song "Down" as the show's theme song. Whether or not that comes to pass, Ms. Patsavas has already secured the rights to a song by a band that has been a staple of "The O.C." -- Death Cab for Cutie.

The Poolhouse (spoilers included...but cryptic)

Have I read the first three scripts? True.
Did I see episode 201, "The Distance?" True.
Is Ben McKenize my best friend? Not really true.
Am I a very lucky boy? True.
Am I going to give you some hints today? Very true.

Last Thursday, the video tape stork flew by dropped the first episode of the new season on The Baron's desk. Before he could even say, "I have episode 201," I was standing over him salavating and ready to swipe the tape. The fear in The Baron's eyes was clear as he slowly handed me the tape. That night, I went home and watched it and even abused my power a little.

So here we are, some 93 days (if my math is right) away from seeing our friends back on national television and I was able to see the first episode. Now before you riot in jealousy, I plan on sharing some things with you.As always, I will share things in the most cryptic way possible to keep you guessing and to keep my butt covered and out of trouble for possibly revealing too much. Are you ready? Huh? Are ya? LET'S DANCE!

Peeled oranges wasn't the sign he was looking for.A beard, a tan and a yacht are the equation of success. You can't forget about the water polo team.Summer cleans up to resonate at a higher frequency.Marissa does a little remodeling of her own.Big lies can't last long before they explode even bigger.Summer was gone before summer really started.A two pronged attack leads to a sweet victory.1622 kilometers.Go to it savages. Strain your brains! Formulate theories! Get hungry for it! And just before you even figure out HALF of them, know that episode 202 will be walking by me...

Adam Brody: 'Teen Vogue' Cover Boy! August 4, 2004 (ET)

Blockbuster-clerk-turned-mega-hot-TV-star ADAM BRODY, of the wildly popular FOX drama "The O.C.," graces the cover of the upcoming issue of Teen Vogue (on newsstands August 10) with "Gilmore Girls" star ALEXIS BLEDEL. We go inside the magazine's fun photo shoot as well as the entertaining article, in which the curly-haired cutie reveals his way of dodging the occasional mob of 14-year-old adoring fans!

"Like in 'The Fugitive,'" he explains, "when HARRISON FORD hears sirens, he'll just subtly steer the other way? I do that when I see groups of teenage girls!"

The 24-year-old San Diego native, who confesses, "I thought that success was literally, solely based on how much you looked like RYAN PHILLIPPE," is clearly making it on his own looks and talent -- as proof, fans will soon see Brody opposite Hollywood A-listers BRAD PITT and ANGELINA JOLIE in 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith.'

"I swear to God, it's going to be awesome," he says of the romantic action flick. "Like 'True Lies' if they were both ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER."

Brody, who keeps quiet on his real-life romance with co-star RACHEL BILSON, does discuss the Oscar®-winning actor that inspires him the most. "Every movie he does," Brody says of TOM HANKS, "even if it doesn't always work out, you know he did it because he thought it could really be something incredible. He doesn't do filler movies and he doesn't do anything just for the money."

Which is what Brody is hoping "The O.C." will enable him to do. "Now," he explains, "I'm only going to do work that I think is really, really good."

Teen Vogue hits newsstands August 10.

TVGuide.com Ask Matt

Question:I could kick Fox for scheduling The O.C. in the same time period as Joey and Will & Grace. Do you think that Fox made a smart move, or is The O.C. on the road to cancellation? You would think Fox would have more sense than that. — Andrew

Matt:As it turns out, I do think Fox has more sense than that. If The O.C. crashes and burns against the tough competition (which also includes the still-hot Survivor, don't forget), Fox will move it to a safer harbor, and swiftly. This is a very important franchise to Fox. But the departure of Friends provided too tempting a window of opportunity to ignore for Fox, which is pretty much dead on Thursdays (one of the most potentially lucrative nights of the week for any network). Fox can't imagine The O.C. will win the time period, but if enough of the show's loyal fans follow it, giving the network a boost in the younger demographics while chipping away at Survivor and Joey, then it will look like a triumph. The bad news in all of this is for the viewer, who has to make tough choices on what to watch, what to record and how to keep up with it all.

Chat with Kristin (E!)

From alfanic: Why does the new season of The O.C. begin so much later than the other shows? Is there any possibility it starts before? And tell me more news about the show!

Hey, it could be worse--you could have to wait until Alias and 24 time: January 2005. [Shudder.] The O.C. isn't coming back until November because Fox has baseball in the month of October, and it's doing that whole year-round programming thang. On the upside, it seems like you'll have plenty of misery to look forward to! From what I've heard, everyone is a mess and either broken up, nearly broken up (even Kirsten and Sandy are having problems) or on drugs, etc. And, to make matters worse, our dear girl Summer is getting a new love interest!

Sarah Wynter returns to "The Dead Zone" this Sunday at 10 p.m. on USA. She'll also be back for the two-part finale on Aug. 22. Robert Iler, Anthony on "The Sopranos," also guest stars on this week's episode as a high school troublemaker. When I interviewed Iler at the start of "The Sopranos" season, he told me he would love to guest star on "The O.C." Ryan and Anthony, Jr. in a fistfight Orange County style. Now that would be some good times.

And from our mailbag...(spoilers contained, please avert eyes or close Newsreel)

Hi, Im a big fan of the OC and I was just surfing the internet for some sites. I just wanted to let you know Marissa's new love interest on the show come this fall will be played by Nicholas Gonzalez (He's a friend of a relative of mine). He will be the guy she was seeing over the summer. I'm don't know what his character's name is or what his storyline is but he is supposed to be on the whole season. If I learn anything else I will let you know. Apparantely Summer will have a summer fling as well but I don't know anything about that actor.

Here are some photos in case you do not know what he looks like: http://65.54.186.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=a702c2b59d7d0af9a9ba829968748ac7&lat=1091537490&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fimages%2egoogle%2ecom%2fimages%3fhl%3den%26amp%3bie%3dUTF%2d8%26amp%3bq%3dnicholas%2bgonzalez%26amp%3bspell%3d1

You can also find his profile/bio on IMDB.

Best,
Mel

-This is spectacular news, thanks again Mel! Before this email we only knew Nicholas was doing a 4 episode arc and we didn't know who Marissa's new boy will be. I think with the addition of Nicholas as Diego will be great. This new character will bring his own personal history, his own friends, expand Marissa as a character and will throw mommy Julie into another tizzy because her daughter is "slumming it" again, just now with an employee. Will this leave Julie wide open to go after Ryan? We know she has a thing for Marissa's ex? Will she compete with Marissa for the pool boy's attention since Caleb will be in lockdown? I think we all are looking forward to the new season.
