Seth Cohen's Our Hero, Too: Apparently, we female types aren't the only fans with a Seth Cohen shrine set up in the back of our closets (oh, you know you have one, too). At Fox's session for The O.C. Adam Brody told us: "I was at a golf course in Huntington Beach, and, like, 15 Seth Cohens came up to me." (Pausing to enjoy mental picture...) "They were, like, 16, and they all had, you know, their little indie rock. And they were like, 'Seth Cohen's our hero.' I was surprised at how many people this character is speaking for now."
Melinda Clarke (Julie Cooper) had her own story of "inspiration," which went down at the season-one wrap party. "A young man and his friends were sitting at a table," she explained. "And as I walked by he grabbed my arm and said, 'I just wanted to say thank you. Because of you, I'm dating my best friend's mother.' "
Rage Against The O.C. Think The O.C. finale was depressing? Well, sounds like there's plenty more angst to come, tubey-doos. Although we now know that Seth will be safe, content and home when the series returns, other characters won't be so lucky. According to executive producer Josh Schwartz, Marissa's coming back in a "dark, dysfunctional place" this season. "We needed to get to a really emotional place to change these people."
Mischa Barton (Marissa) said she was shocked when she read the first script. "She's fallen off the edge of it. She's definitely not dealing well with Ryan leaving. She's depressed and angry and hurt, and she can't really express her feeling and emotions, and so it's all bottled up inside of her. She's got this really fun rage to play, because she's just angry now."
Tate Donovan says he's also in a pit of despair (which explains the sexy beard he's sporting for the season opener). "I think Jimmy is heading down another giant spiral down. I've only read two episodes, but he's not handling life too well."
Meanwhile, a little roll call for ya: Schwartz tells me Anna (Samaire Armstrong) won't be back, but that man-stealing Theresa (Navi Rawat) "absolutely" will. Humph. ____________________

07/24 - [Josh] Schwartz said now that viewers "get what the show is," his goal for the next season would be to dig deeper into the lives of its characters. "We are going to slow down the storytelling some this year, I think," he said. "I think, you know, there won't necessarily have to be a brawl at every black-tie affair this year." He revealed that Ryan would eventually move back to Chino but refused to be drawn on how. "I think it was never a question of would Ryan come back, but a question of how, and also how his leaving and the summer that has taken place with his absence, with Seth's absence, has sort of ... torn these families apart." Schwartz was even more tight-lipped on the whereabouts of Seth, only going so far as to reveal that he is "unharmed." Kirsten, meanwhile, will have "reached a breaking point" over the departures of her boys. Theresa will be back next season, as will Kirsten's sister Hailey for a "brief" stint. Also back will be the Nana (Linda Lavin), who appeared in one episode last season to inform Sandy that she had cancer. "She was great," said Schwartz. "The Nana really popped for people. And so, therefore, I think it's safe to say the chemo is working." Source: Digital Spy (Thanks silverweaver for the tip.) ____________________
O.C. faces heavy surf on return Published July 22, 2004
The O.C. became last season's most pleasant surprise because of its refreshing tendency not to take itself seriously. The lighthearted Fox drama went a bit too far, however, with a non-cliffhanger finale nobody could take seriously.
The story line had the two young central characters, Ryan and Seth, leaving the tony community south of Los Angeles for parts unknown. There, of course, was no chance they would keep going. If they did, there would be no show.
The O.C.'s creator, Josh Schwartz, says those who find fault with this plot choice don't get it."
It was never a question of whether Ryan would come back, but how. Also, how his leaving and the summer that has taken place with his absence, along with Seth's absence, has sort of torn this community apart and how they are going to have to rectify and rebuild once they return."
Schwartz had to take a shot at creating a magnet to pull back his audience for the second season. By the time The O.C. returns Nov. 4, it will have been off the air for almost six months. A programmer for a rival network said he couldn't understand the strategy of not scheduling summer reruns, since many viewers got to the series late after hearing strong word of mouth. Besides, he noted, The O.C.'s in-season repeats performed better than most serialized dramas, again possibly because newcomers were trying to catch up.
Even more challenging for the series is the fact Fox has moved The O.C. to a suicide slot on Thursday, against Survivor and Joey. Schwartz responded to the shift the way producers always do, offering all the reasons why his show will beat the odds. (Almost without exception, a year later when series in such situations wind up getting pummeled in the Nielsens, the producers confide they never believed what they were saying but had no other choice.)
"We have our fan base. I think they're going to come with us. I really do believe we're going to be able to build on that audience and expand. I think it's wide open."
Returnees will notice a slightly dialed-back O.C. this season, Schwartz said. The emphasis will be more on character development. "We are going to slow down the storytelling. There won't necessarily have to be a brawl at every black-tie affair."
Audience familiarity has reduced the need for over-the-top plotting to keep viewers interested, Schwartz feels. "I think people get the show now. I think they really embrace these characters and actors. Now we want to dig in and really get to know them even better."
One thing that won't change is the equal emphasis on mature-adult and young-adult story lines. There was a widespread feeling that if The O.C. caught on, the parents would gradually become invisible, as they did on Beverly Hills, 90210.
No chance, Schwartz said. "It was always going to be as much about the adults as it was about the kids. I think that this makes the show that much more interesting for more people."
Schwartz borrowed words of wisdom from Peter Gallagher, who plays family patriarch Sandy Cohen, to explain why the show will remain multi-generational. "Why tell only half the story?"
To downplay the adults, Gallagher said, "would deprive yourself of massive opportunities for drama and comedy. To present to the world [that] `teenagers are geniuses and the world would be a better place if it weren't for those pesky adults' wouldn't ring true."
The humor leavening the dramatic twists also is more reflective of the real world than episodic dramas generally are, Gallagher said. Without it, he might not have been interested in signing on. "When I was toying with the notion of doing a TV show, what always perplexed me was how they were devoid of any humor. How inaccurately that reflects most people's life experiences, I thought. Half of what gets you through the day is either taking delight in other people's misfortunes or laughing at your own ... and I am really funny."
Melinda Clarke, who plays vixenish Julie Cooper, discovered in a disconcerting manner how realistic the show is to some viewers. Julie's first-season antics included a torrid affair with the former boyfriend of her teenage daughter. At the show's wrap party, Clarke met a young fan. "As I walked by, he grabbed my arm and said, `I just want to say thank you. Because of you, I'm dating my best friend's mother.' The friend was sitting right next to him, rolling his eyes."
The flabbergasted Clarke said the only response she could immediately come up with was, "OK. I guess you're welcome."
For the rest of the night, Clarke said, every time their eyes met, he would mouth the words, "Thank you."
Gallagher witnessed the scene. "That's exactly how it happened. It was amazing."

We've got your "O.C." update! We caught up with the tubalicious MISCHA BARTON, RACHEL BILSON, PETER GALLAGHER and MELINDA CLARKE for a sneak preview. Although the season doesn't officially start until November, ET has learned that it is not a question of if Ryan will come back, but how. And creator/executive producer JOSH SCHWARTZ reveals that the absence of the two teenagers has torn the community apart, so there will be a lot of rebuilding of relationships when they do return. If you just can't wait to catch up on the lives of those in Newport's hot cul-de-sac, FOX is releasing the first 27 episodes on DVD in October. According to Josh, the DVD will include a behind-the-scenes tour of the real Orange County and deleted scenes with commentary. ____________________
ET's On the Scene With 'The O.C.' July 19, 2004 (Please click on link to see video) It will be November before fans of "The O.C." will be able to check back into the happenings at the Cohen house and discover where Seth (ADAM BRODY) set sail to, and whether Ryan (BENJAMIN McKENZIE) is returning from Chino.
But for those who just can't wait for an "O.C." fix, ET has the latest on Adam, Ben, MISCHA BARTON, RACHEL BILSON and MELINDA CLARKE.
"I think it'll be a great year," Rachel told us. "I can't even wait to see the episodes once they're put together again. I'm kind of addicted to the show, myself!"
ET has learned that it is not a question of if Ryan will come back, but how. And creator/executive producer JOSH SCHWARTZ reveals that the absence of the two teenagers has torn the community apart, so there will be a lot of rebuilding of relationships when they do return.
Seth's character may have originally been a nerd, but now that he has had a popular, hot girlfriend (Rachel's Summer), he has gone from geek to cool.
"I was at a golf course in Huntington Beach," says Adam, who admits he grew up watching FOX's earlier hot primetime soap, "Beverly Hills 90210," "and, like, 15 little Seth Cohens came up to me. They were about Seth Cohen's age, about 16, and they were like, 'Seth Cohen is our hero. ' I thought that was really neat. I was surprised at how many people feel like this character is speaking for them now."
For her part, Melinda sees her character Julie Cooper Nichol as an original. "She is the most complex character I have played," she says. "For me, she is a survivor. I don't play her as a villain. She is trying to do the best she can -- with the most money she can. She is trying to be a mother, but the example she had is one of the worst we've ever seen on TV."
And Melinda has a very funny story to tell about the older woman-younger man relationship she had in the first season with Luke (CHRIS CARMACK). "At the wrap party, this young man and his friends were sitting at a table. And as I walked by, he grabbed my arm and said, 'I just wanted to say thank you. Because of you, I am dating my best friend's mother.' And the friend was sitting right next to him rolling his eyes."
To revisit season one, or catch up on the lives of those in Newport's hot cul-de-sac, FOX is releasing the first 27 episodes in October. According to Josh, the DVD will include a behind-the-scenes tour of the real Orange County and deleted scenes with commentary.

Ben: Voting Advocate and Pedicurist?! July 22, 2004
Is BEN AFFLECK leaving showbiz to be a nail specialist? Not quite -- but the actor is scrubbing a gruff German woman's heels for a good cause -- the "Declare Yourself" voter registration campaign!
Tonight on ET, it's the exclusive look at the new star-packed PSAs -- featuring ADAM BRODY, RAY ROMANO, LARRY DAVID, WANDA SYKES, ZACH BRAFF, and more, which will air on Comedy Central beginning Friday, July 23rd!
NORMAN LEAR's national nonprofit, nonpartisan "Declare Yourself" campaign joined forces with Comedy Central to produce the spots encouraging youths to register to vote for the 2004 presidential election.
"I think it's important for young people to vote for the same reason (it is) for anybody to vote, to have a voice in the future of the country they live in," Ben explained. "It's a responsibility people have."
And Ben's good friend KEVIN SMITH directed the fun and informative spots, one of which features Ben as a pedicurist who tells the camera, "You know, in the time it takes me to pumice the heel calluses of this mani-pedi specialist, you could be online finding out how to register to vote."
"The O.C.'s" Brody gets to make a sandwich during his PSA, while reminding young people that in the time in takes him to cook a grilled cheese sandwich, they could be registering to vote online!" For more info, check out www.declareyourself.com, and watch the next ET!

The Comings and Goings of The O.C. (so far)
Here is a list of notable characters and what has been speculated or mentioned to be in store for them. Also, a few little thoughts or so on my part.
Returning:
Seth: Gets lost at sea but will come back unharmed; will get a job at a bait shop and is trying to do good things for others (could possibly be a new leaf turned because of his boating trip?).
Ryan: Was doing construction while away from Newport but returns to the Cohen’s; the new academic advisor helps him realize he should start looking toward the future because he will have one and that he seems interested in architecture.
Marissa: Becomes a raging alcoholic but will be in a new relationship because of Ryan’s absence (as per Josh Schwartz). She’s in a pretty dark, dysfunctional place (per Josh at TCA).
Summer: Will get a new boyfriend and remain friends with Seth; how will she help Marissa?
Kirsten: Relationship with Sandy is shaky; wants her boys home; she has reached a breaking point since the boys left; probably will sink even lower when she finds out her father has been arrested
Sandy: Relationship with Kirsten shaky; will he help Caleb legally? Will his involvement or lack thereof cause even more strife between him and his wife?; how will he treat Seth and Ryan when they return?
Caleb: Alan Dale has been bumped up from reaccuring actor to full-time castmate; look forward to him being arrested within the first few episodes; will he be groveling for Sandy's help? How will he face his brand new wife and his two stepdaughters let alone his own two adult daughters?
Julie: Leaves Caleb after finding out he’s broke; maybe a new, rich man comes into town? How will she treat rich-again Jimmy? How will try to send Marissa away again so she can get help? Will she ever find her other daugher Kaitlin in that gigantic house of hers?
Jimmy: Now that he has some money, will Julie come-a-groveling? Can he help his daughter with her problems? Will he be someone to turn to for Kirsten and Hailey? Will he play more of a part in Newport?
Reoccuring:
Hailey: Will be back “briefly”, Amanda Righetti's new show North Shore has her committed but she has the option to return to The O.C.; probaby returns due to the fact that her father has been arrested; what will come of her relationship with Jimmy?
Theresa: Will be in the show, but most likely not for long so the show can keep rolling on with new concepts and with new characters; she will have a miscarriage so we never find out if the baby was Ryan's or Eddie's or even someone we have no clue about
Luke: Moved to Portland, Oregon but may make a visit, don’t forget he has family still in Newport as well as friends.
The Nana: Because of viewer response, she will return and her health will be improving, the chemo is working.
Kaitlin Cooper: Much debate on where the Cooper's youngest child is. Seems like most don't care; there is always the possibility she can play a more prominent part; if Luke does return, maybe her dream will come true and she can be the third Cooper woman to get with Luke (highly unlikely...hey, good dream sequence Josh!)
Danny: Bret Harrison has made mention that his character Danny may come back for an episode; Bret is extremely close to the O.C. kids and crew so it's very likely.
Gone but you never know::
Eddie: Most likely will not return. Eric Balfour has a new show, Hawaii and has said he is done with The O.C. I’m sure his name will be mentioned during any interactions between Ryan and Theresa.
Anna: So far, nothing on the grapevine. Samaire Armstrong has moved on to Entourage
Rachel: Does not look like she’ll be back. Bonnie Somerville has moved on to NYPD Blue’s final season.
Holly: Like the title to Guster's 3rd album (trivia: one of it's songs was on The O.C.), she seems lost and gone forever. Rumor mill has it that Ashley Hartman is dating James Franco (in theaters now as Harry in Spiderman 2).
Donnie: Unless Seth gets bored and decides to try to hang out with Donnie, it is extremely unlikely he will be back.
Trey Atwood: Does anyone remember when he will be released? Maybe Ryan will come to him for advice; maybe he will seek out Ryan again
Dawn Atwood: Will Mom try to contact her baby boy or forget about him? Maybe she will turn a new leaf and try to take Ryan back
Arturo: Besides the possibility that he didn't know his sister is a little slutty, he has no real need to come back unless he wants to try to kick his buddy Ryan's ass for making Theresa less virtuous.
Bill 'Shaun' Shaughnessy: Most likely will not appear again but maybe he will have a jail cell accompanying Caleb's or will appear in court against him to get a smaller sentence for himself.
Grady Bridges: While Marissa and Summer may continue to watch The Valley, Summer may mention in passing how ew he is in real life to any new people she befriends.
Kate: She did give Seth her phone number at the club, he could always give her a ring; Fox has done pretty well with Paris Hilton on television shows for them, they may ask for a favor; when she appeared there was a rumored clause she could come back
Oliver Trask: No plans of the sort; most viewer reactions were sour towards him so he's most likely will not, but at the heading suggests, you never know
Newbies or fresh meat, if you will:
Ms. Ava Fisher: New academic advisor who will help Ryan make some decisions for the future; an Ivy-educated, African-American woman who still thinks of herself as a kid, so she doesn't talk down to them.
Summer’s Stepmonster: The concept for her to appear is in the works.
Pool Boy: Four episode arc (so far…); Latino descent.
Marissa’s new boy: He must be ok with Marissa’s alcohol dependency.
Lindsay: Ryan goes to a girl's house to tell her he should have gone to the dance with her. She says that anyway they wouldn't have worked out because they are from two different worlds. Ryan leaves. Later that night, Lindsay drops by; seems like maybe Ryan's new love connection in the works
Seth’s new boss at bait shop: 17-year-old girl wearing a retainer who got kicked out of school and is now working full-time.
Possibilities: maybe parents’ coworkers, "we're going to introduce some new kids who will trouble the waters," said Schwartz (Note: on one of the sides these kids were mentioned - Amanda and Jane who do water ski lessons and their friends Ed and Jake - in my opinion, they wouldn't name another kid Ed...they already had an Eddie so these could be falsies or foilers if you will that Josh puts out there for us just to be nice); lawyers, witnesses and prison mates of Caleb.
New hangouts: It was made mention that there will new places the characters will venture to, instead of just the Cohen's house; expect the gigantico home of the Nichols, the house Caleb bought for Julie to be one of them as well; any new jobs Seth and the rest may take on (whatever happened to Ryan and the Crab Shack?); any new friends' home or even more of Summer's home besides the bedroom; the cast often shoots at Ocean Trails Country Club in Palos Verdes, California. That's the golf course Bill could have taken over but chose the Chicago project on the finale of The Apprentice instead.
Some of this has truth behind it (from interviews of cast and crew), others are rumors and heresay from last season and the summer months and others are just plain ol' speculation on my part. So, please take this with a grain of salt and pepper.

Tuned In: 'O.C.' stays on the QT But reveals new time that pits it opposite 'Friends' spinoff Saturday, July 17, 2004 (post-gazette.com)
LOS ANGELES -- No spoilers! That's how it's done in the O.C.
The cast and producer of the popular Fox soap "The O.C." showed up at press tour with little information to feed TV critics, preferring to keep everything a surprise for the Nov. 4 second-season premiere of the Orange County, Calif.-set soap.
The biggest challenge facing the show in year two? A new time slot: 8 p.m. Thursday opposite "Friends" spinoff "Joey." Get those VCRs warmed up.
"We have our fan base, and I think they're going to come with us," said "O.C." creator Josh Schwartz. "I think we're going to be able to build on that audience and expand."
"The O.C." has been praised on several fronts, particularly for its willingness to incorporate humor into the largely humorless world of the prime-time soap and also for giving the adult characters, not just the teens, substantial story lines.
"A world where teenagers are geniuses and the world's a better place without those pesky adults would not ring true, especially in a [real] world where there are high stakes and that's full of anxiety," said star Peter Gallagher, who plays patriarch Sandy Cohen. "Fortunately, [Schwartz] wanted to tell both sides of the story."
Interestingly, "The O.C." has had wide appeal, not just with female teens, usually the core audience for a teen soap, but also with teenage boys. Adam Brody, who plays funny Seth Cohen, said he was on a golf course recently and was approached by a gaggle of 16-year-old Seth Cohen wannabes who all shared Seth's indie rock interest.
"I was surprised how many people this character is speaking for now," Brody said. Melinda Clarke, who plays vixen mom Julie Cooper, got an interesting reaction from one fan at the show's wrap party. Last season Julie had a brief affair with Luke (Chris Carmack, now departed from "The O.C."), her daughter's teenage ex-boyfriend.
"This young man and his friend were sitting at a table, and he grabbed my arm and said, 'I want to say thank you. Because of you, I'm dating my best friend's mom,' and the friend next to him was rolling his eyes. ... Every time I'd see him across the room he'd mouth, 'Thank you!'" This much Schwartz would divulge about next season: Sandy's ailing mom, played by Linda Lavin, will return.
"The nana really popped for people, and therefore I think it's safe to say the chemo's working," he said.
And look for fewer fistfights.
"We're going to slow down the storytelling some this year," Schwartz said. "There won't necessarily have to be a brawl at every black-tie affair."
Fans hungry for more "O.C." stuff might want to check out "Stop Being a Hater and Learn to Love 'The O.C.' " [Sorry I haven't put up my summary of that yet...will get to that!] ($9.95, Penguin), an unauthorized guide to the series by Alan Sepinwall, TV critic for The Star-Ledger of New Jersey. A boxed set of the first season of "The O.C." will be released in October.

CSI Pink Slips Two Players, O.C.ers Tee Up on Trump's Greens July 19, 2004
Step right up for the latest patter from the Press Tour. Les Moonves lays it on the line about the recent goings on with the CSI crew. Plus, he gives his two cents regarding the boxing-show-ripoff allegations. Meanwhile, small screen scoopage includes sizzlings from Six Feet Under, The O.C., Alias and more!
From londonbridges: What's up with The O.C.? November 4! I can not wait that long! Any info? One consolation--the DVD is coming out in October, and on it, McG gives us a behind-the-scenes tour of the real Orange County. They'll also have commentary, deleted scenes and a candid moment with Adam Brody professing his love for me.
A reporter asked if Josh Schwartz (exec producer) could tell us anything about Seth's travels. Josh answered, "Really, I can't. But we could play hot or cold." Reporter: "Is he safe?" Josh: "Yes, he's unharmed." Reporter: "Miserable?" Josh: "No, he's content." Reporter: "Far away?" Josh: "No."
Safe, happy and here. Yes, my friends, Chrismakkuh came early this year.
From londonbridges: Why didn't MTV pick up Newlyweds: Adam Brody and Kristin? Too racy for network TV. At least, that's what they told us.
From goobergirl: More O.C.! How funny is this? The cast often shoots at Ocean Trails Country Club in Palos Verdes, California. That's the golf course Bill could have taken over but chose the Chicago project on the finale of The Apprentice instead. Anyhoodle, Adam said Trump now owns the property and that, hey, come whenever you want. "And wasn't there a thing like if we say his name we can have it for free?" Adam asked. Josh Schwartz replied, "I'm sure, yes. Maybe we'll make him a love interest for Julie." To which I can only say...
Josh also said: "Marissa's coming back in a pretty dark, dysfunctional place."
And I asked Mischa if Marissa's getting a love interest this season. She said, "Yeah, we will, but...it happens because of Ryan's absence, which is really interesting."

'O.C.' Creator Keeps Quiet on Season 2 (but Seth's Fine) (Monday, July 19 02:06 PM) By Rick Porter
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Ryan's in Chino. Seth is alive and well, at least physically. And the Nana is responding to her cancer treatment.
That's more or less what we know about "The O.C." as it begins production on its second season. FOX showed a few clips from the season premiere to reporters Friday (July 16) at the TV Critics Association press tour, which hinted that Kirsten (Kelly Rowan) has reached a breaking point about the departures of Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie) and Seth (Adam Brody). "Summer's over. ... Bring him home," she tells her husband, Sandy (Peter Gallagher).
Creator Josh Schwartz is keeping pretty tight-lipped about plot points from the early episodes, but he does allow that Ryan will eventually return to Orange County.
"I think it was never a question of would Ryan come back, but a question of how, and also how his leaving and the summer that has taken place with his absence, with Seth's absence, has sort of ... torn these families apart," Schwartz says.
FOX ordered 24 episodes of "The O.C." for season two -- down from 27 in its freshman year -- and set its premiere date for Thursday, Nov. 4. Schwartz says now that viewers "get what the show is," his goal for the season is to dig more deeply into the lives of its characters.
"We are going to slow down the storytelling some this year, I think," he says. "I think, you know, there won't necessarily have to be a brawl at every black-tie affair this year."
Schwartz is adamant about not revealing where Seth's sailing trip, begun in last season's finale, finally ended. He'll only say that Seth is unharmed.
Navi Rawat's Theresa will return to the show -- she's seen in the clip FOX showed at press tour -- and current "North Shore" star Amanda Righetti will be back "briefly" as Kirsten's sister, Hailey, Schwartz says.
It also appears that Linda Lavin will definitely return as Sophie 'Nana' Cohen, Sandy's mom. Lavin appeared in one episode late last season, in which she told her son she had cancer. "She was great," Schwartz says of Lavin. "The Nana really popped for people. And so, therefore, I think it's safe to say the chemo is working."
Taking Direction: Doug [Liman] is notoriously a mess, says a source about the director of Swingers and The Bourne Identity, who, it turns out, may be featured on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Anyone who knows me has recommended Queer Eye for me, says Liman. But one friend actually sent me the application, and I filled it out. They were going to remake me for my Passover Seder, adds the director. But my movie didn’t finish shooting until May, so we missed the window. This must have been disappointing news for Brad Pitt, who is starring in Liman’s upcoming movie, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Pitt is a fan of the show and urged Liman to get himself Queer Eye’d as a condition for signing on to do the film. And the admiration is mutual. We’re all obsessed with Brad Pitt! trilled Queer Eye’s Carson Kressley. Liman says he may be able to schedule the show next year.
