WELCOME TO LAGUNA, BITCH: MTV has started production on what it's calling TV's "first ever reality drama." According to Variety, Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County shadows seven teens — five girls and two boys — as they experience such high-school rites of passage as prom night, spring break and sex under the bleachers.

E!
From deedeegirl: Are Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson dating? There are pictures of them kissing!
Yes. And I hear Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt are an item, too! Shhh...but yes, Adam and Rachel are even admitting it now.

From hades: Is anyone from The O.C. set to appear on the spinoff?
I asked Gail Berman that, because I was curious about Anna (who moved back to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), and Athens or whatever they end up calling it, is supposed to be set in a wealthy east-coast community. But she said as far as she knew there were no plans to have any O.C. peeps in the regular cast.

From hy_pe: When is the premiere of MTV's new show Laguna Beach?
Sept. 14. Yeah, it's basically The Real World: Orange County, although sadly there is no Seth Cohen. Hmph.

From syl817: Laguna Beach? Is it a reality show? What's the premise? Does it have a premise--that might be asking for a lot, being on MTV and all...
MTV says it has "the look and feel of a scripted drama, without the conventions of reality television." It's about seven real O.C. teens who are ridiculously hot and wealthy and have known each other all their lives.
(as for what conventions of reality television means: no confessionals basically)

The Menu

The O.C.

Summer is supposed to be a time to relax, unwind, and enjoy a couple months of carefree fun. But if you're a fan of The O.C. (and who isn't?), you may find your lazy summer is interrupted by a little nail-biting anticipation. The first season of the addictive TV drama (which examines the secret lives of teens and parents in the posh SoCal suburb of Orange County, if you didn't already know), ended in May with a cliffhanger so stunning it left everyone asking: what happens next? Mischa Barton, who plays rebellious Marissa Cooper on the show, knows all the answers-- but the classy rising star isn't telling! After growing up on stage in New York's theater scene, this glamorous New York native appeared in big screen blockbusters like The Sixth Sense and Notting Hill before landing a role on the show that would become TV's biggest hit of the season. All your questions will be answered when The O.C. resumes with the premiere of Season 2 on Fox-- which won't happen until November. That means a big wait before anyone finds out what becomes of Ryan, Marissa, Seth and the gang from Newport Beach-- but try not to let the suspense ruin your summer!

Entertainment Weekly's Must List
#3 The O.C. Parents

NAMES/AGES (From left) Melinda Clarke (Julie Cooper), 32; Tate Donovan (Jimmy Cooper), 40; Peter Gallagher (Sandy Cohen), 48; and Kelly Rowan (Kirsten Cohen), 37

MUSTWORTHINESS Forget those ''90210'' comparisons. These grown-ups have their own fistfights, love triangles, sexy outfits -- and even teenage lovers.

SPEAKING OF MRS. ROBINSON After the conniving Julie hooked up with her daughter's ex, Luke, ''somebody said on the website, 'Luke and Julie is like Dylan and Cindy Walsh!''' Clarke says. ''I'm like, 'Not even close, buddy.'''

MOMMY ISSUES ''What's interesting about [Kirsten] is she's trying to juggle being a mother and having a career. On TV, you're usually one or the other,'' says Rowan. ''There's guilt because I'm not the perfect Carol Brady mom.''

DADDY ISSUES ''My sister calls me regularly and is like, '[Jimmy] is the worst father I've ever seen,''' Donovan says. ''I'm so neglectful. I'm so wrapped up in my own drama, I barely know my daughter is alive.''

IT'S NOT TEEN SPIRIT ''Silly me, I never saw this as a teen drama,'' says Gallagher, best known for film work like ''American Beauty.'' ''Boy, I'm as sharp as they come. It never occurred to me.''

TYPE-CASTING Clarke: ''Originally they said Julie was 40 going on 16, plastic everything, tan skin becoming leathery.... Hopefully [that] wasn't why they cast me.''

NEXT Season 2 premieres Nov. 4.

'O.C.' Co-Star Righetti Washes Up on 'North Shore'
(Wednesday, June 23 01:39 PM)
By Daniel Fienberg
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com)

One year ago, Amanda Righetti was looking for work. In her first pilot season, the young actress landed the lead in "No Place Like Home," a drama from "Party of Five" creator Amy Lippman, but FOX decided not to pick up the series. Executives were so enamored with Righetti though that she was signed to the kind of talent holding deal that can either
lead to a big break or to a year of bad scripts and obscurity.

For Righetti, the deal turned into a pair of the former, as the Las Vegas native has emerged as the go-to Party Girl for hot FOX primetime soap operas. In her 10-episode run as Hailey Nichol on "The O.C.," she managed to throw a wild, uncontrolled party, work as a
stripper at an upscale Hollywood club, romance a notorious embezzler and get into a killer pool-side catfight.

Making a splashy debut in the second episode of the summer drama "North Shore," Righetti's Tessa Lewis sang drunken karaoke, helped trash a hotel room, fended off an abusive boyfriend and scammed her way from vagabond to assistant concierge in the course of
an hour.

Thanks to FOX's commitment to year-round programming, Righetti was able to surf from one upscale beach location to the next without skipping a beat. "I really, in my mind, had a goal of being able to work over the summer, whether it be a film or television or a play," she explains. "Whatever it was. I still wanted to be able to stretch myself as an actor. It just turned out that timing-wise, 'The O.C.' was going to be finished up and 'The North Shore' was going to be starting. I thought, 'You know, Hawaii's not a bad place to be.'"

On the surface, Hailey and Tessa seem cut from a similar Bad Girl mode, an archetype that the 21-year-old actress still enjoys playing. "I like the colors," Righetti says. "I like the layers of the characters. It makes it challenging as an actor and especially on TV it's nice to have a character that's constantly unpredictable."

With Tessa and Hailey, Righetti has gotten to play forces of unbridled id, cutting swaths that are as much self-destructive as damaging to those around them. While casual viewers may find the two women identical, she explains that the differences lie in their backgrounds. "Tessa is a lot more raw," she notes. "She comes from a broken home and she started on her own at a younger age. She's really more of an alley cat. Whereas Hailey, she's a lot more sheltered. I don't think that she deliberately tries to hurt people. As much as she likes to stir up the pot, there's also consequences and she recognizes that. I don't think she wants to push it too far. With Tessa, she does it because it's what she likes to do. She gets her kicks from being that very manipulative person." Righetti enjoys taking chances with her wild characters, but admits that she didn't enjoy watching playback of her off-key cover of "All By Myself."

"I was mortified," she laughs. "Mortified. I don't know how well it's gone over with the audience, but I watched it with full embarrassment."

She's much less embarrassed by her character's skimpy wardrobe, which in her first episode alternates between a skimpy red bikini and cut-offs, a maid's uniform and a pilfered evening gown. "I've gotta tell you, it's really hot over here," Righetti sighs. "I know it sounds very silly, but the weather is a force to contend with. You can't control it. When you're wearing a lot of clothes, you're more miserable, because they're just sticking to you. When you have less clothes, it's a little bit easier to get through the day."

"North Shore" is half-way through its steamy summer shooting schedule and Righetti is already looking forward to a possible return to "The O.C." She doesn't have any kind of deal in place for next season, but she's hopeful.

"I love 'The O.C.,'" she says. "I had a great home with them. It was an incredible cast and crew and just a pleasure to work with everybody on the show. I would love to be back there if they'll have me."

Righetti's first "North Shore" appearance encores on Thursday night (June 24) at 8 p.m. ET and original episodes air at 8 p.m. on Mondays.

TV Gal Tears Open the Envelope
(Monday, June 28 08:02 AM)
By Amy Amatangelo
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - In retrospect, they probably should have been called the TV Gal Reader Awards. Sure it's not as catchy (or as self-indulgent) as the Amy Awards, but it is a more accurate description. Because, remember, in the 2004 Amy Awards, you picked the categories, you chose the nominees, and you decided the winners.
I, because I love you, take the heat for your decisions. And, let me tell you, some readers are mighty cranky that Adrianna's death on "The Sopranos" didn't make the cut for Best Death or Character Exit (perhaps, like me, you're not completely convinced she's dead). Others are stunned by the organized effort of those fans who really, really, really (they're not kidding) want Carter and Abby back together on "ER." Even I'm confused that "The O.C." is considered a guilty pleasure, not just a pleasure.

But that's okay, for you, my people, I will take any and all complaints.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2004 Amy Awards. I know many of you had trouble voting and I appreciate your perseverance and your efforts to get out the vote. I love you like Donald Trump loves his pompadour, like Aaron Spelling loves nepotism, like NBC loves remaking British sitcoms.

Here (insert your own drum roll here) are the 2004 Amy Award Winners:
