TV Guide Online - [Insider]: "Whitney Rocks Punk'd!
by Ben Katner

If you read the above headline and thought you were going to get some dish on Whitney Houston, ha! You've been punk'd! But don't blame us, blame Whitney Cummings, the fast-talking 21-year-old Ashton Kutcher recruited to bring stars down to Earth on his hit MTV prankfest (airing Sundays at 10 pm/ET). After talking with the mischievous actress about the practical jokes she's played on everyone from Julia Stiles to The Rock, we couldn't resist trying out a scam or two of our own. Besides, if you think you feel cheated, just wait until she finds out that she was being interrogated by TV Guide Online and not doing a pre-interview for Inside the Actors Studio."

TVGO: Speaking of being very, very, very, very smitten, did Adam Brody really hit on you after you flirted with him at your "engagement party"?
Cummings: [Laughs] I'm not even going to flatter myself here: No! He wanted nothing to do with me. He originally thought I was a friend of Ben McKenzie's, because Ben was in on the prank, so even though I was being relentlessly sleazy to him, he kept trying to be hospitable to me. People are making some noise about the fact that he kept the number I put in his pocket, but what else would somebody do? He never called, that's for sure! Maybe next time.

'North Shore' Splashes onto FOX
(Thursday, June 10 12:04 AM)
By Jacqueline Cutler

HOLLYWOOD (Zap2it.com) - - Perhaps Oahu can do for "North Shore" what Orange County did for "The O.C." last summer -- have gorgeous young things propel their pathos into a major hit for FOX.

Premiering Monday, June 14, the one-hour drama is " 'Gosford Park' for 'The O.C.' set," says executive producer Chris Brancato. "What we are really doing is focusing on a luxury hotel in Hawaii where people from the mainland come to escape their problems. Oftentimes, the downstairs contingent of the hotel gets involved with the problems and helps solve them."

The downstairs contingent, the workers at The Grand Waimea, are general manager Jason (Kristoffer Polaha, "Tru Calling"), guest-relations director Nicole (Brooke Burns, "Baywatch"), waitress MJ (Nikki DeLoach, "Longshot") and lifeguard Gabriel (Corey Sevier, "Black Sash").

Vincent (James Remar) owns the hotel. "I'm the grown-up," Remar says. "You stay in this business long enough and you get to be the grown-up instead of the rebel without a cause."

In the pilot (a tape was not available at press time but the script was), Vincent explains how his father bought the land in 1948 for $18,000. Twenty years later, the dad wanted to cash in for $300,000 and Vincent begged him not to. Vincent took it from a cheap tourist trap to a world-class hotel and recently was offered $200 million for the property. He refuses to sell.

The twist here is that the man offering the major bucks is Nicole's father, a hotelier, whom Burns describes as "Trump-esque." "She doesn't want to be under his thumb," Burns says of her character's decision to launch her career in Hawaii, far from Dad. "She wants to learn the hotel business in her own way without being the owner's kid."

Nicole and Jason have a steamy past, and it's clear from the start that it was an ugly breakup from which neither has fully recovered. Nicole has a new fiance, but she still loves Jason.
"He is very mellow but very ambitious," Polaha says of Jason, who was raised on the island by a father who was a world champion surfer and who makes surfboards.

Polaha is learning to surf for this show. "It is strenuous," he says. "Your neck is lifted up and you're paddling out. It's a blast."
With a hotel as the focal point, the show is perfect for guest appearances. Justin Guarini, runner-up from "American Idol," has a cameo in the pilot. Brancato says he is mulling over "celebratious" guests, those who are famous for being famous, such as reality show contestants. Trista and Ryan from "The Bachelor" will be on. Brancato nixed an appearance by Omerosa of "The Apprentice," although he wants Donald Trump in a guest role.

"North Shore" plans on taking advantage of Hawaii, including the surf culture of Oahu, the Waikiki tourist industry, Honolulu's financial district, and Buddhist temples around the island, Brancato says. Working on stages built for "Hawaii Five-O" and used for "Magnum, P.I." and "Baywatch," "North Shore" built a $1 million set of a lavish hotel lobby.

"It's going to be amazing television," Polaha says, boosting his first steady gig. "Everyone should watch it twice a week. Call your grandparents. We are going for the kids, the old folks home. It is going to be 'Masterpiece Theatre' meets 'American Idol.'"

Flying "The O.C." Skies

by Sarah Hall (eonline.com)
Jun 9, 2004, 11:45 AM PT

Picture this: The plane circles the airfield, the passengers around you prepare for landing. Suddenly, a familiar catchy theme song begins playing in the background, and the flight crew expresses its delight to be the first to bid you "welcome to the O.C., bitch!"

In a nod to Fox's wildly popular sun-soaked teen dramedy, The O.C., an Orange County supervisor has suggested that the county's John Wayne Airport be renamed "The O.C. Airport, John Wayne Field." (Yes, with a straight face.)

a d v e r t i s e m e n t

"I think we need to capitalize on the newfound fame," Supervisor Chris Norby told the Orange County Register. "O.C. is hot throughout the country. It's something they borrowed from us to make it popular."

Despite the fact that no one actually referred to Orange County as "The O.C." before the show began, the idea appeals to Charles Ahlers, president of the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau.

"The television show is gathering audiences all over the world," Ahlers told the Los Angeles Times. "It is a truly great publicity vehicle."

Which means Los Angeles may have missed the tourist-attraction boat in the '90s by not rechristening its LAX airport with the sexier title, "LAX: Beverly Hills, 90210."

Nor did Boston leap at the opportunity to change the uninspired moniker of its Logan Airport to the far catchier "Logan Airport-Cheers!"

There has been no word from John Wayne's family on the potential sexing up of the Duke's airfield namesake, which was christened just days after his death in 1979.

Those behind the idea of flying The O.C. skies are wasting no time trying to get the renaming underway.

Arts Orange County, a group that supports art in the area, is already at work on a redesign of the airport's logo to include its potential new namesake.

The mind allegedly responsible for the show has no problem with the potential branding.

"It was always our goal to rename the county," series executive producer Josh Schwartz told the Times. "And the airport seems a perfectly good place to start."

The O.C. was a huge ratings earner for Fox following its freshman-season launch last August.

An average of 9.6 million viewers tuned in each week to watch the cast of attractive, wealthy and tanned teens prance through day-to-day life on the white sands of the small-screen version of Newport Beach.

Fox snapped the series up for a sophomore season, and the network placed an order for a companion series to be developed by Schwartz.

The fact that the show may project a slightly unrealistic view of life in Orange County doesn't bother Ahlers.

"The message that they're sending may not be of concern to us," Ahlers said. "What is of interest is that Orange County is portrayed as a cool, hip place and a place with pretty people."

A casualty even before the fall season starts

TVGuide.com
FROG BLINKS: The WB is moving its upcoming primetime soap The Mountain out of its planned Thursday at 8 pm timeslot, where it would have gone head-to-head with Fox's newly-relocated The O.C. Instead, the show — think One Tree Hill on a ski slope — will air Wednesdays at 9 pm following Smallville. What'll the Frog net air on Thursdays now? Jeff Foxworthy's Blue Collar TV and Drew Carey's Green Screen Show. In other words, absolutely nothing.

O.C. renewed in Canada (tvtome.com)

CTV announced their new '04-'05 season yesterday in Toronto, and among the fun, is that it has renewed 'The O.C.' for a second season in Canada. Melinda Clarke (Julie), and Kelly Rowan (Kirsten) were on hand to make the announcement. No word yet, on whether the show will air on Mondays or Thursdays.

Also picked up, is 'Athens' (from 'O.C.' creator Josh Schwartz), which will air at 8pm on Mondays in January, the same as in the US.

Watch with Kristin from E! Online

From mishale1: Did Gramercy Park already get booted? I hope not.
It was not picked up for fall. So, it looks like Anna and Jess might well be headed back to The O.C. and Gilmore Girls, respectively.

From kristoc: Any scoop on season two of The O.C.? Or on Adam Brody? I love him.
Nothing new...Except that, like Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling, Adam Brody is also growing some stubblage. According to Page Six, he was spotted last week in a Sunset Boulevard Rite Aid purchasing a beard trimmer. Maybe that's his "I just got back from Tahiti" look?

From seba_88: Is Oliver returning to The O.C.? There has to be a reason he didn't kill himself.
He was at the wrap party, and he said there were no plans for him to return. (Oh, and FYI, he's now got bleached-blond hair. I nearly didn't recognize him.)

From cylee23: Is there a real chance that Anna will return to The O.C.? I also heard Caleb might be a regular.
McG told me "Anna is not gone." They haven't yet decided who's returning but, yes, I also heard that Alan Dale, the feller who plays Caleb, returns on a full-time basis next year. FYI, I love that man in person. He's a New Zealander and as nice as can be.

Dale Becomes 'O.C.' Regular
(Monday, June 07 10:00 AM)
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Faithful fans of FOX's "The O.C." know how much trouble Alan Dale's Caleb Nichol caused last season as a recurring character. Think of all the back-stabbing he'll be able to do next season as a cast regular. Dale's title change leads a slew of minor casting announcements.

When viewers last saw Caleb Nichol in the "O.C." season finale, he had just married Julie Cooper (Melinda Clarke), but he was on the verge of losing his fortune. Dale, who also had recurring roles on FOX's "24" and CBS' "Navy NCIS," will get to further chart that story arc next season.

TV Gal Puts Out a Call for Categories
(Monday, June 07 08:02 AM)
By Amy Amatangelo

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - One thing I've learned over my seven years (can you believe that?) of writing this column is that you can't make everyone happy. Perhaps I love shows you don't and am infuriatingly indifferent to shows you adore (honestly, I'm surprised fans of "Enterprise" are still speaking to me). Maybe I talk to much about actors you can't stand or not enough about your favorite stars.

So once a year I try to rectify this situation with the Amy Awards where you control every aspect of the awards. You pick the categories, you pick the nominees, and you pick the winners. Me? I simply tally the results:

Here's the 2004 Amy Awards schedule.
June 14, 2004: The announcement of the 12 Amy Award categories
June 21, 2004: The announcement of the Amy Award nominees
June 28, 2004: The announcement of the Amy Award winners

This year to save me from carpal tunnel syndrome, we are going to try something a little different. You have until Friday, June 11 at 5 p.m. to post your Amy Award category suggestions to the TV Gal message boards. You will basically be voting for categories via the message board. So if you see a category you like post to that topic. The categories with the most postings will be the final 12 categories.

Now remember this isn't the award show for boring categories like Best Actress, so be creative and be fun. To get you started, here are sample categories from previous Amy Awards -- "I Want that Hour (or Half-hour) of My Life Back aka Worst Episode of the Season" and "Get Off My Show aka Worst Guest Star."

So let's get this party started. Post your categories to the TV Gal message board and tune in next week for the announcement of the 2004 Amy Award categories and the call for nominations.

The MTV Movie Awards are this Thursday at 9 p.m. The awards were taped this past Saturday. Since The O.C. cast is so huge now, I can only assume that at the very least one, if not a good majority, presented. Even not, it's usually something to see. It will be repeated often for the next week or so.
